Sterling Heights, Michigan – Sterling Heights police officer Nikolas Bruno did not expect to use his lifeguards last Saturday when he was on the patrol.

When he was called to Riverland Park at 2:30 p.m. in response to reports about a kayak driver in need, Bruno did not hesitate to jump into the Clinton River to save a woman who was not wearing a life jacket and held on to a tree trunk.

“As soon as I got out of the patrol car, I heard people scream and shouted and realized that she was in a serious danger,” said Bruno. “She had no life jacket on and she is not a strong swimmer, so I pulled my arms belt off and jumped in.”

The woman had kayaking with a group when she hit a depressed tree that was hidden directly under the waterline. She kented and went under her kayak, which she then hit in the head. She managed to get to a tree trunk, and her daughter, who made kayaking with her, were able to swim to a robust block of blocks.

The saved woman reported that she, her daughter and her niece were kayaking for the first time when her kayak was turning after she was caught on a depressed tree in the river. She told Officer Bruno that she “hardly stuck” when he saved her.

“I think that's a good memory of always wearing your life jacket,” said Bruno. “Even if you think you don't need it, just put it on because you would certainly prefer to and don't need it than need it and not to have it.”
