South Salt Lake, Utah, April 28, 2025 (Gephardt Daily) – about 10 hours after an evacuation order for an area in South Salt Lake, the order was canceled and the residents were allowed to return.

The order, which was triggered by a large gas leak, was lifted on Monday shortly before 8:30 a.m.

“The evacuation order was lifted this morning,” said Terry Addison, South Salt Lake Fire Chief, at a press conference on Monday morning.

“The gas company has restored the gas in the region and the power supply was restored to the region. The gas company is currently going through all the measuring devices and we switch off so that you can switch it on again.

“There is no longer any danger in the area.”

The evacuation decision was issued late Sunday afternoon and the residents were supported by the Red Cross. You should also protect them with your pets at LDS Church Meeting House in 3805 S. Main St. Addison. Three or four families stayed in the church.

The fire driven by the gas leak was deleted at 9:30 p.m., but the task of finding and repairing the source of the leak remained.

“They had to dig out the street,” he said reporters. “They found a hole in one of the lines, which was pretty close to the fire last night.”

The investigators of the supply company will determine what went wrong, said Addison.

Timing helped minimize the effects on the community, he said.

“Fortunately, it was a weekend or a Sunday evening, not many people were there. We were able to block the area, send warnings and have the area evacuated.”

Gas leaks are difficult, he said, because “this pipeline is a line amount. Even if gas escapes, there are dirt around this pipe. There are cavity areas where gas can hike along this line, such as water on your sprinkler tube, there is a source of ignition.

Now the leak has been repaired without damage to the residents or other structures.

“As far as we know, everything is normal again,” said Addison. Laxes stayed on the way, “and they will be repaired shortly.”
