The former coach of Denver Nuggets, Mike Malone, said that his MVP vote had gone Nikola Jokić, not to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

“I voted for him again this year – if I had a vote,” said Malone before game 2 of the Western Conference Final about ESPN. “I want to make sure that people know in Denver that I get a lot of warmth at home at the moment.”

Malone's comments on Thursday evening referred to part of his praise for Gilgeous-Alexander against the Minnesota Timberwolves after the game 1 victory of Oklahoma City Thunder on Thursday evening.

Malone said: “Gilgeous-Alexander, he showed why he is the MVP” after his 31-point performance with nine assisted performance in victory 114-88.

Gilgeous-Alexander was announced the following night as the MVP of the NBA.

Previously, Malone was one of the loudest supporters of Jokić when he won the MVP Prize in three of the last five seasons. Jokić and Gilgeous-Aalexander were considered the two leading MVP candidates this season, and despite the long list of successes, Jokić has stacked in recent years, many have argued that he had just ended his best single season in 2024-25.

At the beginning of March, less than a month before discharge, Malone reporters said to a player with Jokić's CV “wins the MVP 10 times from 10.
