Imola, Italy (AP) -Max Verstappen lets Oscar Piatri and McLaren leave with his Formula -1 title.

The defending champion ended Piatri's three-race victory series and gave his title defense on Sunday at the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix with the victory after a daring overhaul on Piatri at the beginning.

Piatri and his teammate Lando Norris, whose McLaren car was previously beaten this season – had no real answer to the pace of Verstappen Red Bull.

Verstappen built up a commanding leadership that was wiped out when the security car rebeled the field and injected more drama late in the breed. He still stated to win in front of Norris, who overtook Piatri with five remaining rounds for second place.

Verstappen won his second win of the season, the first victory since the Japanese Grand Prix of the last month and its fourth time in a row in Imola.

Verstappen praised Red Bull's “Fantastic Execution Allround” when the team marked his 400th F1 race with a win.

“The start itself was not particularly great, but I was still on the outer line or basically the normal (racing) line, and I said:” Well, I will just try to send it to the outside, “and it worked really well,” said Verstappen about his crucial overhaul. “Of course that unleashed our pace, because when we were at the top, the car was good.”

It was also a clean overhaul after Vipen -Aggressive style brought in the last two races in Saudi Arabia and Miami.

Norris' late Move on Piatri was almost a copy of Verstappen, although Norris had the advantage of being on fresher tires than his teammate.

“In the end we had a good little fight between Oscar and me, which is always tense, but always a lot of fun,” said Norris, admitting that Verstappen and Red Bull were “too good for us” today.

Piatris lead over Norris in the overall ranking was reduced to 13 points, nine behind Norris with Verstappen.

Hamilton jumps back

Lewis Hamilton recovered from the 12th on the grid and finished fourth in his first race for Ferrari in Italy.

Hamilton benefited from a fight between his team -mate Charles Leclerc and Alex Albon von Williams.

Albon complained that Leclerc had pushed him out of the route when they fought fourth place, and Hamilton came past both drivers before Ferrari Leclerc finally asked to give Fifth fifth.

George Russell was a seventh for Mercedes in the second Williams. Isack Hadjar was the ninth place for racing bulls and Red Bull teammate Yuki Tsunoda was the 10th place after starting a crash in qualifying.

An action -packed “farewell” by Imola

It was expected that overtaking could rarely be rare in the last race of F1 for the foreseeable future. Instead, the Italian fans were spoiled at the beginning of spectacular pull and many other overhaul.

The narrow, bumpy imola track was a favorite among the drivers who enjoyed his old challenge in the old school since he returned to the F1 time plan during the Covid 19 pandemy. Nevertheless, his status as Italy's second race – only the United States accommodate more than one – are susceptible to its position.

The race on Sunday was the last under Imola's current contract, and although it is still officially said goodbye, there was no word next year.

Verstappen said it was a “shame” to lose a track like Imola.

“If you want to expand the business and make it more popular, I understand it,” he said. “If I personally only talk about the enjoyment of driving, it is this kind of tracks that have caused me to fall in love with the race in general.”
