The Grand Prix of Monaco may be “the jewel in the crown of Formula 1”, but the race itself is rarely a television. Sometimes it's downright.

F1 and its government agency, the FIA, hope that a rule for the race on Sunday will change. The drivers will be forced to change the tires at least twice, in the hope that a more pit stop strategy will shake an event in which Saturday qualification – and the resulting lattice position – is often more important than race day.

“I think it can go in both directions,” said Champion Max Verstappen on Thursday. “It can be pretty simple or it can be completely crazy because security cars come into play or not make the right calls. I think it will probably spice up a little more.”

The change should stop a repetition of last year when a crash of the first round released the red flag, so that everyone makes their only mandatory tire change.

With the overhaul of almost impossible on the twisted Monaco streets, the rest of the race was a procession. Home driver Charles Leclerc won Ferrari and all top 10 ended in the network order.

How the race on Sunday could depend on whether teams are creative with their strategies.

Leclerc leads the way

The French rookie-Isack Hadjar called himself “so stupid” on the radio after he had folded the wall with the rear left wheel in separate incidents and had damaged his car for Rennbulls both times.

McLarens Monaco -Stammbaum
