Trump delays the EU tariff until July 9th

President Trump said on Sunday that by July 9th he would be imposed on all imports of the European Union to allow more time for trade negotiations.

In a post about the social of truth, Mr. Trump said that he had spoken to Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, about his latest threat to take the tariffs on June 1 if no trade agreement could be reached next week. Mr. Trump has expressed frustration on negotiations with the EU and said that the union only slowly offers trade concessions during a 90-day window to achieve a deal that fulfills the administration.

“The President of the Commission said that the talks will start quickly,” wrote Trump. The European Commission is the executive arm of European Union.

Ms. von der Leyen said on Sunday in a separate social media contribution that she had a “good call” with Mr. Trump and handed over to the president that the EU needed additional time to reach a trade agreement. She said that the talks would “quickly and determined”.

“The EU and the United States share the most consequential and closest trade relationship in the world,” she wrote.
