New art exhibition in New Haven City Hall highlights the month to sensitize mental health – NBC Connecticut

In the town hall of New Haven, a new art exhibition is exhibited in honor of the National Month of Mental Health.

The art exhibition “Healing through Art” was made by artists of the scholarship, a non -profit organization that has provided therapeutic support and rehabilitation services for adults in New Haven since 1960.

The aim of the art exhibition is to destroy the Stigma in connection with mental health and to encourage people to take their own mental health seriously, as the expressive art coordinator of the Marisabel Sanchez organization shows.

One of the artists is Joanna Stewart, in which depression and PTSD were diagnosed in 1992.

“My art comes from my life experiences, many, many trauma, since the season, since 1999,” said Stewart.

Stewart said for her that art served as an escape and as a way to guide her inner battles.

“It publishes the trouble, all the grief, pain, injuries, hatred, the trouble,” said Stewart.

Joseph Higgins, artist and member of the Fellowship Place, informed how a close friend of his recommended to visit the organization after experiencing a difficult time in his life.

“About three years ago I did a real bump on the street and found that I should contact the support of the community and have received an enormous amount of support since then, I found some great friends,” said Higgins.

He described the scholarship site as an indispensable resource in his life.

“I couldn't do this without the place of community, they are like my true north star, they are the brightest light in my sky,” said Higgins.

In the meantime for Sadek Mustafah, he creates works of art that concentrated on premature babies because his son was born early 19 years ago.

He said his experience in the intensive care unit stayed with him forever.

“I only want to draw attention to people for premature babies, and the process that the parents go through and have the effects on their lives,” said Mustafah.

During the press conference on Thursday, the city officials also announced the new resource leader “Dimensions of Wellness”.

Lorena Mitchell, coordinator at the Office of Community Mental Health Initiatives, said that the guide was filled with resources for people who want to improve their mental health and well -being.

“This really focuses on eight different dimensions of well -being in your life and offers a kind of reflection and inspiration,” said Mitchell.
