Gas leak at the oil well in Dibrugarh Evozes Baghjan Blowout Memories

Dibrugarh, May 2nd: A high-pressure gas leak by Oil India Limited (oil) Well No. 309 in the village of Nagajan sent shock waves by Assams Debrugarh distribution on Thursday afternoon, causing the panic among the residents and inflamed the fears of another Baghjan-like disaster.

The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. in the Lankasi-Kothalguri area, as a loud hissing sound filled the air and the feathers of the water into the sky. For many villagers, the deafening sound and the sudden chaos haunting memories of the Baghjan Blowout from 2020 – brought back a catastrophic event that was still engraved in the collective memory of Upper Assam.

After almost eight tense hours, Oil's emergency disaster reaction managed to control the situation on Friday at 1 a.m. The leak, which was due to a mechanical failure in the case fountain's housing valve, was contained before an ignition or explosion could occur.

“There were high -pressure gas shots and the risk was extremely high,” said a senior oil official. “Our teams worked through the night under strict security protocols to” kill “the fountain and replace the faulty valve. Fortunately, there were no victims or property damage.”

In an official statement published on Friday, Oil confirmed that the leak was due to a mechanical mistake, and emphasized that the fountain had been safely suppressed. “Oil remains committed to the highest security standards,” said the company.

But fear linger for residents.

“We heard a loud noise and saw petrol – it felt like Baghjan,” said a villager and remembered the horror of the blowout in 2020 in the Tinsukia district, where well No. 5 broke out and fire broke out uncontrollably. This catastrophe claimed three lives, displaced serious damage to the sensitive dibru-saikhow national park and the Maguri-Motapung-moisture area. It took almost six months to extinguish the inferno.
