The fire brigade of Lecter Co. mourns death for the retired firefighter

Whitesburg, Ky. (Wymt) – The fire brigade of Whitesburg remembers a man who has devoted more than three decades to the service of his community.

Mark Sexton served firefighters for 32 years, worked up in the ranks and trained generations of first aiders throughout his career. His fire brigade colleagues say he always smiled and went beyond that, even when his health decreased a few years ago.

“He enjoyed helping the community,” said firefighter Wallace Bolling, Jr. “He was a person. A guy who serves more than 30 years of his community, from the kindness of his heart? You no longer do boys.”

Sexton retired in 2023, but was still an instrumental part of the department.

“Losing Mark is an emptiness. Mark was a fireman, trainer, EMT instructor, just a wealth of knowledge,” said Bolling. “Irreplaceable.”

The official died on Friday and left big shoes to fill. However, civil servants say that his heir will continue to live through the continued work of the firefighters, including one of his three sons, who is currently voluntary.

His fire brigade colleagues say that there will never be a different sign, but they encourage people to step into his footsteps to honor the life he lived.

“He helped the community for 30 years. Maybe that's something you may be interested in,” said Bolling. “I mean, all fire brigades … nobody will reject you. We are all short.”
