4 killed when a car falls through an Illinois After-School Center

Four people, all children or adolescents, were killed and some others were injured on Monday when a car broke through an after-school center in Chatham, Illinois, a village south of Springfield, the state police said.

It is believed that the victims are 18 years and younger, said the Illinois State Police Department in the press release.

The car hit three of the victims outside the building and the other in it, the police said. Several people were taken to the hospital and at least one person were flown, the authorities said.

There was no additional information about the injuries on Monday evening or about the age of the injured, said Melaney Arnold, a spokeswoman for Illinois State Police.

The driver, who was not identified publicly, was not injured and was rated in the hospital on Monday evening, the state police said. Nobody else was in the vehicle, said the police.

Officials of Chathham Police, Chatham Fire and other agencies reacted to a call on Monday afternoon of a vehicle that drove outdoors in the open in the summer and after the school camp, said the state police, the state police said

According to the police, the driver drove into the east side of the building, hit several people outside and then drove through the building.

Illinois State Police and Chatham Police Department examine the crash. It was not immediately known what caused the crash.

Governor JB Pritzker from Illinois said on social media that his administration had monitored the situation.
