More Florida teachers who were examined in the middle of the “preferred name” scandal

Brevard County, Fla. – After a teacher of Brevard County called a student with a “preferred name”, more teachers are now being examined according to the local teacher union.

On Friday, the Brevard Federation of Teachers (BFT) officers informed the Local 10 Orlando News Partner WKMG News 6 that the union represented a teacher that was reported anonymously to the district.

“It is not clear what the social media contribution was or who made the first post because it has been completely reduced,” says a message from the union.

Last month, the school district announced that a teacher at the Satellite High School, who was identified as Melissa Calhoun, knowingly described a student with a “preferred name” without the permission of the student's parents, which is a violation of state law.

After the parents had submitted, an investigation was initiated in the incident, which led to school officials decided not to extend their contract after he had expired this month.

However, trade union officers explained that the teacher who was examined this time did not come from the same high school as Calhoun, although the teacher's identity does not yet have to be revealed.

“We have heard that other teachers received letters to examine them,” wrote a representative of the union. “However, they didn't turn us to represent.”

News 6 turned to the school district to check whether these investigations take place. A spokeswoman answered with the following explanation:

“According to the state law, the district is required to investigate complaints. There are studies in the entire district on various topics. We do not publish any information about active examinations.

What I can tell you is that no other employee has received a reference or other disciplinary measures in relation to a student through a different gender identity without parental permission. “

In the meantime, BFT representative of News 6 also announced that the students were drawn to make statements about teachers, although this is not a new process.

The former board member of the Brevard County School, Jennifer Jenkins, went on Facebook to comment on the allegations.

“I was told alarming that dozens of children were drawn in offices in which talks were held to find out their teachers,” said Jenkins. “This is a week in which children already have to do with test tang.”

In an interview, Jenkins News 6 said that she had received a message that local headmaster was warned of a parent who was “specifically aimed at teachers in this district, pictures of screenshots of social media posts and comments and answers that they have made.”

Jenkins claimed that the district of the destination has now been based on teachers who have expressed public support for Calhoun.

“You ask whether teachers discuss sexuality whether they have banned books or pride flags in their classrooms,” said Jenkins. “They tell them that rainbow flags in Florida are illegal and not.”
