Mexico's President says she rejected Trump's plan to send us troops across the border

Mexico city – Mexico City (AP) – President Claudia Sheinbaum from Mexico said on Saturday that US President Donald Trump suggested to send American troops to Mexico to help her administration combat drug trafficking, but she declined.

Her remarks to followers in the east of Mexico came in response to an article published the day before in Wall Street Journal and described a tense call last month, in which Trump calmed her down to combat drug cartels in Mexico.

“He said,” How can we help you combat drug trafficking? I suggest that the United States military comes in and help them. “And do you know what I said to him?

She added: “Sovereignty is not for sale. Sovereignty is loved and defended.”

The White House did not immediately answer a request for comments on Sheinbaum's statements.

The US military presence has increased steadily in the past few months along its southern border with Mexico after Trump's command in January increased the role of the army in containing the river of migrants.

The US Northern Command has increased troops and equipment to the border, occupied surveillance flights to monitor fentanyl trade along the border and an extended authority for US special units to work closely with Mexican armed forces, carry out operations against cartels.

On February 19, Trump described many of the gangs and cartels that smuggled drugs into the United States as foreign terrorist organizations, restricted their movements and the law enforcement authorities lent more resources against them.

But Sheinbaum's hard attitude on Saturday signaled that the US print on one -sided military intervention would bring you and Trump on a collision course after months of working with immigration and trade.

“We can work together, but in their territory and ourselves in ours,” said Sheinbaum.

She added to the applause: “We will never accept the presence of the US military in our territory.”
