The Ganjam police arrested 18 criminals and confiscated 17 firearms in the middle of increasing violent crimes

Berhampur: The Ganjam police arrested 18 criminals and recorded 17 illegal firearms with 66 live ammunition.

The IG (Southern Range) Niti Shekhar and Ganjam Sp Suvendu Patra spoke in Chhatrapur in Chhatrapur (southern reach) on Sunday. The procedure is part of the preventive police work in the district. The 18 criminals include members of an organized crime syndicate.

Patra said the Sheragada police arrested six criminals and confiscated five mandatory pistols and 22 living ammunition from them. Similarly, the police from Kotinada arrested five criminals and confiscated four pistols and 16 living ammunition. The Aska police arrested four criminals and confiscated three pistols and 12 ammunition. The police from Bhanjanagar, Polasara and Chamakhandi each arrested a criminal. The arrested criminals are history sheets, he informed.

The police suspect that the confiscated weapons were procured from outside of Odisha. Special teams are formed to track and dismantle the supply chain. The police also think about the confiscation of real estate that was illegally acquired by the criminals.

The police addressed the newly introduced section 111 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, who deals with organized crimes together with the weapons law and other relevant provisions, said Patra and added that patrol in rural areas will be intensified in the coming days.

In particular, the district observed seven murders in the past week. On May 1st, a 17-year-old girl reported in her house by a stalker in the village of Karapalli within the police borders of Gopalpur in the Ganjam district.
