A viral video that shows a white woman who supposedly calls a black 5-year-old child the n-word on a playground in Rochester, Minnesota, has triggered outrage and unexpected financial support for women.

The incident occurred on April 28 and, according to NBC News, was shot by the 30-year-old viewer Sharmake Omar. In the film material, the woman, who was later identified as Shiloh Hendrix, accuses the 5-year-old to go through her child's diaper bag.

When Omar confronts her to call the boy the N-word, she replies: “If he is behaving like this.” When he continues to press her and asked: “Why don't you have the balls to say it again now?” She seems to repeat the slur. In the video she also stretches out her tongue and makes an obscene gesture at Omar while holding her child.

Since the video in Tikkok, Twitter and Reddit began widespread, Hendrix has started a fundraising campaign on the Christian crowdfunding platform with the title “Help me protects my family”. In the description, she claims: “I called the child for what he was” and says that the video “caused my family and me great turbulence”. From Sunday, May 4th, the fundraising campaign has collected over 630,000 US dollars.

The campaign also attracted severe criticism of the support of people who work for white nationalist and right -wing extremist rhetoric. In response to this, the public comments are limited comments. “We understand the sensitivity of this situation and the strong emotions that it caused it,” said the CEO of the platform, Jacob Wells, the Washington Post in an explanation.

In response to the campaign, the Rochester branch of the NAACP started their own gofundme to support the child and his family. The fundraising campaign entitled “Help us looking for justice for a 5-year-old who faces racist hatred” emphasizes the need for actions of the community and racial justice.

“Shocking, the act responsible for this hateful action has started a fundraising campaign for itself and collected almost 150,000 US dollars in less than 24 hours,” wrote the NAACP. “Many of their supporters' comments celebrate and justify their hatred. We were asked by countless community members how they can help. This campaign is our answer.”

The NAACP campaign collected over 340,000 US dollars on Sunday afternoon. The description states that the fundraising campaign is now closed at the request of the family, whereby all funds are accommodated in a trust account that is managed by the child's parents.

Omar, the man who recorded the video, told the local outlet Kimt News 3 that he was bothered online, with people repeating his arrest in the past. Hendrix contained details of Omar's criminal register, including fallen charges in connection with a case of sexual assault from 2022 in their fundraiser. He did not react publicly to the claims.

On May 1st, the city of Rochester made an explanation on Facebook in which the video became “deeply disturbing” and confirmed that an examination is underway. “The city of Rochester is firmly obliged to promote public spaces that are inviting and safe for all residents and visitors,” wrote the city.

For many, the sharp contrast between the support that Hendrix has received, and the measures they have taken is another example of where this country is still when it comes to breed, accountability and who is protected.
