The Utah family tells shakes rescue efforts in fatal Idaho crash crashes

A family in Utah still processes the panic, fear and now overwhelming emotions after trying to help people on the fatal accident on Thursday.

Terah Motzkus and her family from Garden City saw the crash on the way home from dinner and hurried to help.

Terah's husband helped a person to flee by cutting his seat belt with a knife, and then used an ax to try to catch others in the tour. The family watched the flames spread under the vehicle and were filled with smoke.

Previous stories:

“It was really very difficult,” said Motzkus. “My husband, when we get these people out and the van got on fire, he said that he could still hear at least one person who called.”

Motzkus used diapers in her car to help a woman with a bad leg injury.

“She was shocked,” said Motzkus. “She said I wanted to go to sleep now. And we just had to say that you have to keep your eyes open, you have to stay with us – you know you? She always says I want to go home. Then she asked for her friend. She just said my friend was okay, okay?”

Unfortunately, her friend didn't make it.

Motzkus said the feelings of what happened that day were still raw. She attributes to other good Samaritators who have also entered to try to save life.

The crash between a pickup truck and the van, which travels to Yellowstone National Park, was killed seven people and is being examined.
