Mayer Brown secures the life -saving Habas relief for Texas Death Row inmate | News

Mayer Brown achieved a considerable victory in the case of Ex Parte Larry Edgar Estrada. The Texas judge granted Larry Estrada Habeas Corpus relief, which found it intellectually hindered and reformed his death sentence to lifelong imprisonment. This rare result in a case in Texa's death penalty underlines the company's longstanding commitment to justice and the protection of people in need of protection in the criminal justice system.

Mayer Brown was appointed to represent Mr. Estrada in front of a federal court in 2003 after his initial state habits were rejected. Over the next two decades, the company worked tirelessly on behalf of Mr. Estrada and submitted a successive state habea petition based on its intellectual disability in 2019.

On April 16, 2025, the Texas judge issued its statement to be relieved and found that Mr. Estrada met his burden to determine a mental disability Atkins v. Virginiaand to reform his prison sentence from death to life imprisonment. The decision of the court, which is based on the agreed findings of the parties and the experts submitted, represents a life -saving result for Mr. Estrada and a significant victory for the protection of intellectually disabled people in the criminal justice system.
