The river that flows through the Texas State University campus was one of Austin Salin's favorite things over the campus.

“He loved going to the river. He loved hanging off with his friends on the river,” said Austin Salte's father Rodney Salyer.

What flows now are memories because on September 16, 2021 everything stopped for the Salyers when her son was killed.

Salyer lay and slept and slept when his neighbor Gabriel Brown claimed around midnight that he accidentally fired his weapon while modifying her. Salyer was shot through the wall and died.

Salyer was a junior at Texas State University. He studied criminal justice and military science and had just signed a contract with the army.

Last month the Salyers family was back on campus.

“Back to the campus that Austin loved, he was so excited to be there. He loved his time there, so there is a happy emotion with it, but then there is also the emptiness, the hole, the difficulty that he is not there,” said Rodney Salty.

The Salyers were on the campus to continue to remind him and honor him and to present Austin Salyer Community Service Award at the gala of the university police.

“I think Austin would be really happy and smiled at us because we are able to pass on his legacy by introducing a student and helping another student,” said Bonnie Salty.

This year's recipient of the award was Julio Matta.

“I feel very honored that I received this award,” said Matta.

Matta is in the Texas State Rotc program and studies marketing and military science. It has been serving in the army for more than 10 years and finally wants to become an officer in the army. The Saliers said it was his efforts to clean the river that noticed them.

“You are not only ready to bring your life on the line with the military, but are also ready to do simple things in your community and make the campus and your general community a better place,” said Rodney Salyer.

The Salidiere said that her son always tried and followed her advice to do the right thing.

“I will try to fulfill the values ​​he wears and the one I already have to honor the legacy of one of our own,” said Matta.

The university has contributed to building a foundation in order to pass on this award with a scholarship every year.
