The police said two 7-year-old, an 8-year-old and an 18-year-old were killed. Six other children were brought to hospitals and one remains in a critical condition.

The driver who was not injured was taken to a hospital for evaluation, and the police said that toxicological reports are pending. The driver, a 44-year-old woman, was not in custody on Tuesday morning and the cause of the crash continues to be examined.

“I cannot collect the words to express a lot of everything that makes sense in printed form. However, I know that our families who have suffered loss and injuries today are very, very badly injured,” said Ynot Outdoors founder Jamie Loftus on Monday in a social media post. “They are friends and their children are like our children.”

According to Loftus, security camera material showed a vehicle that left the road “a considerable distance” and was rotated over the field towards the building.

The Chatham police department asked for prayers.

“A terrible tragedy has taken place here that affected us all,” said the department in a Facebook post.

By Monday evening, some members of the community and beyond had changed their Facebook profile photos into a picture of a red band and the words “Chatham Strong”.
