ATAF carries out a tax study with a high network value of individuals in Algeria

This initiative is part of a more comprehensive regional study that aims to support taxable tax administrations in assessing the legal and administrative feasibility of strengthening compliance with persons with considerable assets.

The African Tax Administration Forum (ATAF) launched a technical mission according to Algeria as part of its tax rate project with a high network value (HNWI). The mission under the direction of ATAF's research and statistics team began on April 27 and will be completed by May 9, 2025.

This initiative is part of a more comprehensive regional study that aims to support taxable tax administrations in assessing the legal and administrative feasibility of strengthening compliance with persons with considerable assets. The aim is to promote fairness and efficiency in taxing the assets without necessarily introducing new taxes.

During the first phase of the mission, Ataf held a founding meeting with high -ranking officials from the
Algerian tax administration (DGI-Algerie)including the head of the tax administration. Discussions at the center of the existing property tax regime in Algeria and the practical challenges associated with the determination of property are owned, especially if assets are inherited or do not achieve liquidic income.

In response to this, DGI-Algeria Ataf asked to carry out a detailed technical review of the current asset tax system. This review focuses on evaluating equity and the administrative efficiency of the regime and offers data -controlled recommendations to improve its effectiveness.

It is important that the role of Ataf in this project is advisory and analytical. The team will not suggest the introduction of new taxes, but will give an insight into how existing systems can be refined in order to better achieve the national income goals and at the same time to promote equity.

Participation in Algeria is part of a more comprehensive regional project, which includes ongoing work in Zimbabwe, Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Eswatini, Uganda and Zambia. Togo and Ghana are expected to join the initiative in the near future.
