Dash problems: Albania's combustion scandal is the focus of the stage

Ilir Rranci once enjoyed a look at snow -covered peaks from his new home outside of Elbasan, Albania. But now there is an enormous landfill, the result of a botched waste energy project at the center of a massive corruption scandal.

The failed incineration plant, which is supposed to convert garbage into electricity, is one of three multimillion euro locations that are connected to allegations of illegal contracts and misconduct with high-ranking civil servants. Former Environment Minister Lefter Koka has already been detained and the former present Prime Minister Arben Ahmetaj is charged.

Prime Minister Edi Rama, who is committed to a fourth term, promises the EU membership by 2030 despite the skepticism of experts. This scandal can influence its chances of choice, since past opposition allegations and the dissatisfaction of the voters have a shadow over Albania's political landscape on corruption.
