Help with who stolen from veterans in Amherst

Amherst, Wis. (WSAW) portage County Crime Stopper needs your help to find out who stole some very important objects of veterans in Amherst.

Two M1 Garand rifles and empty ammunition were stolen from the village Amhersts VfW building on the Washington St. South. It is right behind the beautiful monument near Guyant Park. The police believed that this happened between December last year and March 2025. You say someone broke into the VfW and opened the doors and locks to get in. One of the weapons and a box with empty ammunition were found a little later not far from the scene in a wooden area.

“The second rifle is still on foot. If someone has information, we have no information or leads regarding the second rifle at this time,” said Captain Josh Ostrowski, Sheriff office from Portage County.

VfW representatives say that the rifles were used for special events and ceremonies. The weapons were each rated around $ 800. They do not believe that the rifles living ammunition can be released. If you are charged and found guilty for burglary, you can receive the maximum prison of 12 years and a fine of $ 25,000. Their judgment would depend on the courts.

Burglaries are a crime of opportunities. In recent cases of crime stopers, we have seen several in which someone tried to steal and steal valuable or sentimental objects. In this case, Portage County said that the VfW had done everything to protect itself, including the place where they have stored the weapons that are used for events and ceremonies. For you at home, the Sheriff's office says that you should take into account.

“Companies should secure companies and {residences}, private individuals should secure firearms in a closed area at any time,” said Ostrowski.

Thursday evening on New Schannel 7 at 5 we look in more detail in the stolen rifles and how they are used in these different ceremonies.
