Officers who examine a fire in whom a 14-year-old boy died, believe that more people may have identified than before.

Layton Carr died on Friday in the disused Fairfield Industrial Park in Bill Quay in Gateshead.

The police say that detectives are now concentrating their efforts to identify all those who are present at the time of the fire and have spoken to information from witnesses or people who knows what has taken place.

As part of the examination, 16 children between 11 and 14 were arrested at the age of homicide and released against the deposit.

Det Ch Insp Mark Atherton asked everyone who was in the area on Friday evening to turn with the police.

He said: “Regardless of how insignificant you could be your information, this could really support our inquiries.”

Det Ch Insp Atherton said: “A thorough investigation is underway if we determine the circumstances in connection with the tragic incident that night.

“Our thoughts stay with Layton's family and friends when they process the loss of their beloved person.”

Thirteen boys and three girls were arrested.

In a tribute, Layton's family described him as a “cheeky, happy boy” with “an absolute heart of gold”.

“Layton, we love you more than all words can ever explain. They are missing more than they will ever know,” said his family.

More than £ 20,000 were collected to help his relatives.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said that a “heavy fire within a section of one of the buildings” was registered in the industrial area shortly after 7:50 pm.

The fire was brought under control shortly before midnight.
