The man who was arrested for suspected manslaughter will not file an indictment for charges after the Associated Press died after the death of hockey player Adam Johnson. On Tuesday, the British prosecutors announced that the case against Matt Petgrave would not progress.

On October 28, 2023, Petgraves came up and cut Johnson's throat in a game between the Nottingham Panthers and the Sheffield Steelers after an on-day collision. Johnson died shortly afterwards and Petgrave was arrested two weeks later.

After a long investigation, which Petgrave provided for financial support for his legal fees, the Crown Concity Service (CPS) decided not to file any charges. The deputy prosecutor of Crown Crown Michael Quinn published a statement on this decision.

“The police from CPS and South Yorkshire worked closely to determine whether criminal charges should be raised against the other ice hockey player involved,” said deputy prosecutor Michael Quinn. “After a thorough police investigation and a comprehensive review of all evidence of the CPS, we came to the conclusion that there is no realistic view of a conviction about a criminal offense, and there will therefore be no law enforcement. Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of Adam Johnson.”

Johnson was 29 years old at the time of his death and spent several seasons at the NHL and AHL level with the Pittsburgh Penguins organization. In 13 NHL games, Johnson scored a goal and three templates.
