The selection of Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, born in the USA, inspired many reactions on social media on Thursday.

Many people felt obliged to offer their thoughts.

While people were enthusiastic about the “first American Pope”, it should be noted that Leo's predecessor, the Pope Francis born in Argentina, is actually the first Pope from America.

Other people suggested that the decision to choose a Pope from the USA was a politically motivated decision by the Catholic Church.
