The office of the Sheriff of Lowndes County reveals crimes after decline

Columbus, Miss. (WCBI) – Life in a safe community has priority.

There are times when it looks like one community over the other feels the main burden of crime.

On May 7th we brought the history of the Statistics of the Columbus police.

“People would ask me where are you from? 'And I would tell them Columbus and you would always hear an answer where all shootings and crimes take place,” said Eddie Hawkins.

It is an expression that Sheriff Eddie Hawkins from Lowndes has heard over and over again. Now he uses statistics to prove a different story.

“I want people in the community to understand that this is actually not the case,” said Hawkins.

In the sheriff department of the lownd County, fewer incidents and demands were found for duty.

From 2020 to 2023, the agency was an average of 25,000 services each year.

Last year this number was reduced to just over 15,000.

Hawkins said that despite the declining trend, it was important that his agency remains concentrated. Most laws are ownership crimes.

“There is always room for improvements, and we will continue to do the things we believe that we improve our crime rate in lowndes County and reduce the number of crimes we see,” said Hawkins. “Because our main goal is to protect our community and serve and ensure that everyone has a beautiful place where they can live and raise their family.”

In the past four years, the lownds County Adult Habtzentrum has achieved an average of 260 inmates a day. On May 8th there are 125 people behind bars.

According to Hawkins, strategies such as the attitude of more deputies to add computers to patrol cars, surveillance cameras and crime stops to reduce the numbers.

“We are starting a decline in our crime statistics here in Lowndes County,” said Hawkins. “We have our own problems like any other community, but we do something positive and try to reduce the crime here, and we will continue the same and try to protect everyone here in lownds County.”

Hawkins believes that various things play a role in crime, since certain districts are more than most suffering.

He also said poverty, education, limited economic opportunities and drugs play a role in crimes.
