Omaha, Neb. (Wowt) -Swin Mejia-der Mann, who is charged with an accident in 2016, in which 21-year-old Sarah Root was killed-this week is not in court as expected.

He currently remains in the Douglas County prison with a bond of $ 100 million.

Mejia was due in court on Tuesday, but his public defense lawyer waived the hearing. The case will now go to the district court.

On January 31, 2016, Mejia, an illegal immigrant, was accused under the influence of alcohol due to street races when he bumped the Root vehicle near the 33rd and the Lstrasse in Omaha. His blood alcohol level was the legal limit three times. Root, who came from Council Bluffs, died at the scene. It was the same day when she had completed the college.

Five days later, on February 4, 2016, Mejia was officially charged for motor vehicle murder DUI, and his bond was set at $ 50,000. The next day he published the required 10 percent of his bond and was released from prison after signing a document in which it promised to stay within 10 miles of Douglas County, to report on alcohol tests twice a day and to take part in a 24 -/// -/ -to -do drug test program.

On February 9, 2016, an arrest warrant against Mejia's arrest was issued after skipping a drug test. A few weeks later, on February 26, a judge added an indictment for failure when Mejia, who was 19 years old at the time, did not hit his preliminary hearing.

On February 27, 2025, the Honduran national police announced on social media that Mejia had been captured in Honduras. Shortly afterwards, the authorities put him back to the United States.

He was on the run for almost nine years.

Senator Joni Ernst (R-IOWA) led to the fact that Mejia was able to connect and flee from the USA to create “Sarah's law”, which were named after Root and obliged illegal immigrants, the violent crimes against Americans were arrested regardless of the status of the deposit.

President Donald Trump signed Sarah's law to change the Riley Act sheet in January 2025 – more than eight years after the introduction of legislation.

The law named after Sarah Root now applies to the suspect arrested in connection with her death.

The judges only have the option of refusing a bond for people who are charged with first degrees due to the first degree or sexual assault, but Mejia would have to pay 10 percent of its $ 100 million bond. If he makes up 10 million US dollars for Douglas County's prison, the farewell of Sarah's law would require the federal authorities to hold it out immediately.

Nevertheless, Mejia informed the judge in court that he did not have the money to publish deposit.
