Workshops for contraception of retail crimes to combat shoplifting | News

A workshop for prevention of retail theft took place on Friday from the Northern Nevada Chapter of the Nevada Organized Retail Crime Association (Orca) in order to cover everything from the contraception of loss to the protection of assets.

The main topic in the workshop was to create and examine a case that leads to successful criminal prosecution.

Chris Hicks, district prosecutor of Washoe County, says that the theft of retail is no longer an isolated annoyance. It has become a serious problem.

In 2023, retailers recorded an increase in shoplifting incidents by 93%in comparison to 2019.

The loss of money due to shop theft rose by 90% compared to the same period.

In 2022 US retailers lost almost 100 billion US dollars against theft.

North Nevada is also not immune to this crime.

“From 37 shops in the sockets at Legends, from 2022 to 2024 there was an overall increase in retail theft reports,” said Hicks.

He says that these crimes threaten the livelihood of our local companies that endanger the security of their employees and affect all of us.

Hicks also mentions when business is exposed to significant losses. It is the consumers who pay the price through higher costs, reduced access to goods and services and a reduced shopping experience.

Orca was created to fight retail theft.

Hicks says: “With this initiative, we increase communication, share intelligence, carry out important training courses and vote in pitfalls.”

He adds: “Our collective goal is to improve the quality of the investigation, strengthen law enforcement measures and to send a clear regional message.”

Part of the goal of the training is to give the LOSS prevention officer and certain retail facilities a direct training in order to show you what a perfect examination looks like and show you what information should be collected for law enforcement during these incidents.

“We would like to rationalize the process and strengthen the process so that we can get strong beliefs and hopefully be able to deter part of this behavior and get rid of some of the most common flyers who will hit these retail stores,” said Hicks.

Sheriff in Balam spoke to the Sheriff office of the Washoe County about the technology you used to combat this crime.

“As we know, many retail stores have upgraded their technology in terms of monitoring equipment,” said Baleam. “Many of us use the readers of license plates in the entire community. So this is part of the technology, i.e. the use of retail and work with retail.”

Hicks also says: “The main goal is that it culminates for successful law enforcement.”

These training courses will take place twice a year for retail officers to ensure that everyone is on the same side.

In addition, Orca will hold meetings with law enforcement agencies, prosecutors and representatives of the retail loss once a month in order to share intelligence agencies to better cease shoplifting.
