NYC students achieve far below the state, national SAT average values

New York students achieved far below the rest of the state and the country in the SAT and achieved the lowest average values ​​for at least seven years and disturbed new data.

Pupils of the public school in the Big Apple achieved an average of 473 in the mathematical part of the standardized test of the past year, which is often used for approvals in the USA. There were a whopping 71 points below the average for the rest of New York and 32 points below that of the rest of the country.

Reading and writing remained flat, with the NYC students an average of 482, the same as 2023 -but the rest of the state and country again exceeded the city by far exceeded, with average results of 553 and 519.

The mathematics and reading and writing of parts of the test are each evaluated by 800, which does the highest possible score of 1600.

“It is another wake -up call for public schools in New York City to concentrate on improved teaching in core subjects,” remarked David Bloomfield, an educational professor at Brooklyn College and the Cuny Graduate Center.

The Big Apple satellite flop set a steady decline, which began in 2022 and marked the lowest average cores for at least seven years.

Bloomfield was shocked by a particularly wide gap between Asian and white test participants compared to black and Hispanics.

The performance of the individual population groups of the mathematics section fell in NYC compared to 2023. Asian students achieved an average of 582, a decline of four points compared to the previous year, and white students on average 536, a decrease of eight points compared to the previous year.

But Hispanic students achieved an average of 430 in the mathematics phase – more than 100 points less than their white colleagues and five points less than in the previous year. Black students achieved an average of 426, two points compared to 2023 and 118 points lower than the rest of the state.

Nationally, the mathematics values ​​went back by three points and they have dropped a point nationwide.

The Asian children in NYC read and write better compared to last year, while white students fell 555 to 549. The average of the black students rose slightly from 446 to 449, while the average of the Hispanic children fell 1 point to 445.

All over the country, the average of reading and writing fell by one point, while the rest of New York, not the city, not rose around one point.

“These results remind you that we have to continue to expand access to academic support- especially for students who traditionally did not have,” said Frances Kweller, director of the tutoring company Kweller Prep in Manhattan and Queens.

“Compared to the rest of the state, the population of students in New York City is poorer compared to the rest of the country and has more children with color, more special children and more immigrants whose mother tongue is different from English,” said Eric Nadelstern, the deputy chancellor for lessons at the former mayor Michael Bloomberg, told.

“Although many universities are now test option, West Point still needs the SAT … A strong satellite number strengthens my entire application,” he said.
