Suspect in Salt Lake Hit-and-Run accident with stolen car for murder for crimes charged

The man who is involved in the fatal hit-and-run crash of last week was identified, arrested and charged with several criminals.

Steven Ray Weathers, 61, was charged with automotive murder, a second degree crime. Theft of a firearm or a motor vehicle, a second degree crime; Not at the scene of a fatal crash, a third degree crime; Drink alcohol in a vehicle, a class C; and driving with a refused license, a class C.

On Friday, May 2, around 1:15 a.m., officials from the Salt Lake City police department found a man near 400 South and 200 East to be dead.

The man who was identified as Paul Sagers III was on a curb that was about 52 feet from the crosswalk and held documents.

The officials checked near surveillance cameras and found that Weathers hit the man and fled. He was in a stolen Jeep Cherokee, in which the headlights were switched off.

About 45 minutes later, the medical staff discovered a jeep on the 400 South in the dealer Joe's parking lot, which corresponded to the vehicle description. The vehicle had fresh damage to the front right side, where the pedestrian was supposedly hit.

“After rejecting a can of beer from the driving window, [Weathers] tried to go, but was stopped, “said the charging documents.

The officials took him into custody and found that he smelled of alcohol, helping up, having blood -called and glassy eyes and had to sip his speech when he answered questions.

The officers inspected the vehicle and found a multi-pack of beer, with several doses missing in the cup holder next to the driver's seat.

According to reports, Weathers was so intoxicated that he was unable to carry out field sobery tests safely, so that the officials received an arrest warrant to carry out a blood test.

Weathers was instructed in the Metro prison of Salt Lake County.
