Nashville (5-4-2, 17 points) lost on April 5 in the first of two planned meetings between the teams during the 2025 MLS 2-1 season against Charlotte in the Bank of America Stadium. The boys in gold gave up two goals in the last 10 minutes after defender Walker Zimmerman had suffered a concussion when Charlotte Stürmer Kerwin Vargas accidentally stepped into his head.

Zimmerman has not played since then, but Nashville has asserted himself in the absence of his captain. It is 2-1-1 in the last four MLS games and defeated the Chattanooga Red Wolves 1-0 on May 6th to get to May 16.

Charlotte (6-4-1, 19 points) is in the Eastern Conference Fifth, a place ahead of Nashville. Although it lost its last two league games, North Carolina FC made it on May 6th to continue in the Open Cup.
