Thousands of homeless veterans who are housed as part of a new Trump plan

President Donald Trump signed an application by the executive to transform the country's medical campus of the West -Los Angeles Veterans to the largest center for homeless veteran apartments and care of the country, with the aim of accommodating 6,000 people in the coming years.

Why is it important

According to a score in January 2024, the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) had 32,882 veterans with homelessness. The estimated number of former military employees across the country has decreased by 55.6 percent since 2010.

What to know?

The Executive Ordinance signed by the President on May 9th leads the VA Secretary Doug Collins to found the National Center for Wear independence on the Veterans Affairs West Los Angeles Campus.

The campus, which includes 388 acres, currently houses a large regional hospital and a medical office for veterans.

In a press release published on Friday, the VA said that parts of the campus are currently renting a “wealthy and exclusive” private school, private companies and the baseball team of the University of California (Los Angeles) (UCLA). In September 2024, a district judge decided that the rental contracts to UCLA, Brentwood School and others on VA ownership were illegal because they do not mainly serve veterans.

According to the White House, the new center of homeless veterans “care, the services and the services they are entitled will provide. The center offers living space, drug abuse treatment and support for reintegration into the workforce.

The White House has set the goal of accommodating 6,000 homeless people in the center by 2028.

The financing, which was previously assigned for residential buildings or other services for illegal immigrants, is now being redirected to “building, determining and maintaining” of the center.

“The current arrangement of Executive will make it possible for us to ensure that the West Los Angeles Campus by VA is used as intended: veterans benefit,” the publication said. “Our goal is to transform the campus into a beacon of hope and a goal for homeless veterans from all over the nation who can travel there to find living and support and start their journey back to self -sufficiency.”

VA also plans to found a medical center for former soldiers and women in New Hampshire – the only state in the adjacent US UNS without such an institution.
