The Neural Injury Center for UM could lose federal funds for research on brain injuries

Research and education on traumatic brain injuries are about to lose millions of funds.

Due to a new proposal by the Trump administration, which aims to reduce federal funds.

Officials from the Neuronal Injury Center from the University of Montana say that years of research could be discontinued if federal financing for its Department of Mental Health loses TBI.

“It is not just researchers who pay the price. I mean, these are everyday people who may have a head injury who have less access to services that will stop research, and that is only really worrying,” said Brian Loyd, director of the NEURAL Injury Center at the University of Montana.

According to Loyd, the department is working on carrying out research and providing education to serve people with conceals of the brain or a slight traumatic brain injury.

He adds that the funding of the center comes from grants, which is financed nationwide by the National Institute of Health, the medical research programs and the Office of Naval Research.

These funds enabled the department to hire additional doctoral students, post -doctoral students and research employees. The research department can also carry out.

The elimination of these funds can influence the services that the department for patients can provide that only get a limitation of brain injuries.

“In order to lose this financing, it could have a big impact on what we can deliver and the results we can do. The nerve injury center will make us particularly difficult to make the weather,” said Loyd.

NBC Montana turned to Montana's chosen managers to hear their thoughts about TBI research and educational tools that may have been removed.

We received an answer from the US Senator Steve Senator's office: “Senator Daines will take a close look at the proposed funding cuts and remain in close contact with relevant agencies, since President Trump works to reduce waste and abuse in the federal government.”

According to Loyd, the department heads of the neuronal injury center have to think outside the box in order to find other revenue resources such as clinical services or educational opportunities.

“We try to expand our scope how we support our center outside of federal financing,” said Loyd.
