BMW spy the new X5 G65 plug-in hybrid tested: video

Bringing a new car onto the market includes years of development, followed by an extensive test phase to iron problems. It was almost a year since Car Paparazzi discovered the next generation X5 for the first time, but the “G65” is expected to be debut only in the second half of 2026. In the meantime, another heavily disguised prototype was caught in the movement.

At first glance, you may think that this is a full electric X5. After all, visible exhaust pipes are missing and has a German license plate that ends in a “e” these two microphones mounted on the tailgate tell a different story. You measure the noise level on the double exhaust gas editions. On the driver's side there is also a loading connection on the front fender. This is clearly a plug-in hybrid.

The prototype is not only larger than the upcoming IX3, but also shows a detail that is missing from this smaller NEE class model. The fifth generation X5 will probably be the first serial product vehicle from BMW to be integrated in the Belt line in favor of tiny wings in favor of tiny wings. Although the limited skytop is first encompassed, this M8-based Targa is limited to just 50 units. The X5 also uses the small, electrically operated door publication mechanism for the rear doors.

While we had previously seen Spy video of the X5 PHEV, this prototype belonged to the M -Performance line. The M60E variant will have a quad-exaust setup and an electrified inline-SIX, although a V8 remains available on the US markets. BMW's 4.4-liter S68 will probably remain in regions where the emission standards are less strict.

BMW plans to offer a wide drive stranger: petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid and a full electrical IX5. In addition, it is expected that the company's first hydrogen production vehicle, which is due in 2028, is based on the new X5. The first production for the upcoming models is scheduled to begin in August 2026. A hot V8 provider of X5 M60 will come to the assembly line in March 2027.

Regardless of the drive train, the next generation X5 will take over new class design cues and in-cabin technology. Expect a cleaner, more sophisticated appearance and a minimalist interior that is dominated by a large central screen and possibly measures 17.9 inches. BMW will drop the traditional iDrive turntables and even the instrument cluster. Instead, the new panoramic view display extends as a new projection via the windbreak base. A newly developed optional 3D head display is also planned.

For those who open to Electrics Open Electric, the IX5 will use the same Clar platform, but will receive advanced technologies from NEE class models, including cylindrical battery cells and updated electric motors. The incoming electrical X5 could spell the end for the polarizing IX. However, it is expected that the two coexist for a while before a complete transition takes place.
