Democracy breaks. Are people interested?

Donald Trump wages war against the American Republic. Why don't people worry more?

Today I had a conversation. I will not easily forget this question to this question.

Life do we live the familiar, worn descent into authoritarianism? Or do we experience a new phenomenon that is specific for modern life, in which people have enough of a subjective feeling of freedom in their personal life, that they are willing to get political freedom that they don't need themselves? Years ago I found this attitude in China. I asked my guests if it would happen here now.

What is really freedom? Does a world with wide consumer decisions and work options as well as infinite scrolling somehow do people not recognize that they are with slow motion in a time emergency? And what does that mean how defenders should make democracy? I spoke about all of this and more about the scholar of fascism Ruth Ben-Ghiat von Clear and journalist Andrew Marantz, who has one Great piece in The New Yorker About the parallels between Hungary and what the United States is heading for.
