Delaware University who were killed in the accident near the campus; 8 others injured, including U-Haul drivers

A student of the University of Delaware was killed with a U-Haul truck near the campus, who injured eight more on Tuesday, said University President Dennis Asanis. The driver of the U-Haul was among the eight injuries.

In a letter to the UD community on Tuesday evening, Asanis said that the students were also injured in the crash among the other people.

The Nevark police said around 4:30 p.m. that the officers found an outstanding U-Haul, which was never returned after the original in March. The police said there were two people in the U-Haul, which was located in a parking lot in the 200 Block of East Main Street.

The investigators said the officials tried to arrest the two suspects, but the U-Haul raced away, ran over a curb, hit a police car and ignored the orders to stop. The Newark police decided not to pursue U-Haul and stayed in the parking lot of the shopping center.

Five minutes later, the police said that the truck raced western towards East Main when he met two pedestrians who were near a parked car. The U-Haul then climbed several parked cars before it continued a little further down the Main Street.

The police reacted to the crash and began to give the two pedestrians with life -saving measures. A UD student died at the scene and the other person was seriously injured and taken to the hospital.

The investigators found the U-Haul van and held the seriously injured driver and the passenger. The authorities then took the driver to the hospital, the police said.

The crash on Tuesday marks the second time within a year that a UD student was hit and killed in a crash in the Main Street.

On the first day of the class in autumn 2024, Noelia Gomez, a newcomer to the University of Delaware, was hit and killed by a motorcyclist on West Main Street.

Gomez was fatally hit by 27-year-old Brian Briddle, who drove a motorcycle, on a crosswalk on the campus. Four other people were injured in the crash.

Delaware's newcomer, Matthew McKay, said it was “worrying” that this happened twice since he started college.
