Mock crash gives Hardin County students unive experiences

Savannah, Tenn. – Hardin County Emergency Services organized her second annual Mock accident on the Hardin County High School on Monday morning.

During this sham accident, the students could see the entire process of a motor vehicle accident from 9-1-1 calls to the arrival on site to the safety of the victims.

“So we managed a wreck with two cars with one of the cars with someone who was ejected and a death,” said Larae Smiley-Liger, EMA director of Hardin County. “So the driver in the other vehicle was arrested as a drunk driver or a distracted driver.”

The importance of this sham in the event was to raise awareness of the dangers of teenagers that drives under the influence.

“If you do this at this time of year, you can simply put it in the foreground of your mind. You have to be safe,” said Smiley-Liger. “You don't have to go to these final celebrations, go to these prom parties and then try to drive when you have followed alcohol.”

There was a death and a critical injury in a vehicle, while in the other there was a drunk driver and another critical injury.

“So the firefighting teams had to roll up and judge which patients they had, and then they had to decide how to get them out. If the doors were jammed or bent, where they could not get them or whether they had to pull the roof off the car, they had to think through their expansion plan,” said Smiley-Sliger.

After the victims had been extracted safely, the Tennessee Highway Patrol went around to mark the scene and start their investigations.

Hardin County EMA encourages teenagers to call 9-1-1 when they come across an accident. They also ask them to remove an injured person from a vehicle due to the unknown way of their injuries.
