Bribery scandal rocks M'Mbelwa District Council about HSA Recruitment | Malawi 24

A new bribery scandal broke out in the M'Mbelwa District Council, where some council officials allegedly demand bribes from applicants for the HSA positions for health surveillance assistants (HSA).

Verified reports in the possession of Malawi24 show that certain civil servants have already installed K300,000 of several HSA workers and promised them that they guaranteed a guaranteed employment in return.

The identities of the civil servants concerned and the money transaction statements were held back for legal reasons, but sources confirm that some payments have already been made.

This is not the first time that such misconduct has shaken the Council. In 2023, similar allegations appeared in which civil servants were involved, which reports reported to HSA applicants during an earlier setting drive of 200,000 KS.

Christopher Melele reacted to the revelations and condemned the alleged corruption and demanded urgent measures from responsible authorities.

“These are serious allegations that have to be thoroughly examined,” said Melele. “In 2023 we saw similar demands that were increased, and now they are reappearing. As Midct, we strive to pursue this matter because employment should be based on earnings, not on the payment of how much you pay.”

Melele emphasized that persistent misconduct in recruiting the public undermining trust in state institutions and rightly deserves qualified people.

The authorities of the M'mbelwa district council have not yet given an official statement on this matter. However, the pressure is the pressure of organizations of civil society and members of the public and demands transparency and accountability.

The anti-corruption office (ACB) recently issued a warning and explained that it is taken against any measures that affects bribery and corrupt practices during this year's HSA recruitment.

The HSA recruitment process plays a crucial role in the Malawi public health system, whereby HSAS serve as an employee at the forefront of the front front that offer essential community-based health services. Corruption in the process could have serious effects on the provision of services and public trust.
