Rachael Blackmore Has announced her retirement after a groundbreaking 16-year career in which she was the first female jockey to win the Aintree Grand National and the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Since the Tippery Born in 2011 her first winner at Thurles drove in 2011, he has made a way in the equestrian world and achieved amazing success in a sport that only first approved women in 1973.

Blackmore was appointed Champion Conditional Rider in 2017, the first of many pioneering moments in her career, and two years later she had a first Cheltenham winner with plus TARD and her first class winner at the same festival.

During her Breakout 2021 season, Blackmore was the leading jockey in Cheltenham and drove six winners at the Showpiece Festival before sealing the Grand National on board Minella Times in front of empty stands in Aintree but an estimated global audience of 500 m.

Later she was appointed Rté Sports Person of the Year and BBC World Sports Star of the Year for her achievements before she was the first woman to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2022.

A total of Blackmore had 575 winners against obstacles and in the apartment, of which the last Ma Belle Etoile, which was trained in Cork on Saturday in a characteristic-reserved act by Henry de Bromhead, became a pioneering career for the 35-year-old.

Blackmore announced her retirement on social media and said: “My days of being a jockey have come to an end.

“I have the feeling that time is right. I am sad, but I am also incredibly grateful for what I've been for 16 years. I just feel so happy to say goodbye to the horses I have, and to have success that I have never dreamed of not even dreaming.”

In her explanation, she thanked her parents, supporters, sponsors, jockeys, medicines, owners and trainers, including John 'Shark' Hanlon and de Bromhead, with whom she enjoyed many of her greatest successes.

“A conversation between Eddie O'Leary and Henry de Bromhead in a taxi on the way to Aintree brought my career to a whole new level.

“He is a phenomenal coach who has brought out the best in me. Without Henry, my story is very different.”

Blackmore still has to say what she was going to do next, but wrote: “It is discouraging not to say that I am more of a jockey.

“But I feel so incredibly lucky to have the career I had.

“In order to be in the right place with the right people at the right time and to go on the right horses – it doesn't matter how good they are without them.

“You gave me the best days of my life and I am very grateful for you.”

During her career, Blackmore took part in 4,566 races and won 575 years old. According to the races, it estimated that it earns prize money of around 11 million euros. Jockeys earn an average of around 10% of the winning price through the Professional Jockeys Association.
