On Monday evening, violent clashes between rival armed groups shook the Libyan capital of Tripoli. The media reported that the leader reported an armed faction was killed.

AFP Reporters heard strong weapons and explosions in several areas of the capital from 9:00 p.m. (7:00 p.m. GMT) in several areas of the capital, and the authorities asked the residents to stay inside.

Libery television station Al- and news page Al-Wasat reported on the death of Abdelghani al-KikliHead of the support and stability apparatus, an influential armed group based in southern tripolis.

The Interior Ministry of the National Unity Government in Tripolis asked in a statement that “all citizens to stay at home”.

According to local media, the southern media broke out between armed groups of Tripolis and Rivals from Misrata, a large port city of 200 kilometers east of the capital.

Libya struggles to recover after an uprising from 2011 of years of unrest that led to falling the deceased dictator Moamer Kaddafi.

It is currently divided between a unknown government in Tripolis and a rival administration in the east, which is controlled by the Haftar family.

Despite the relative calm in recent years, clashes have been breaking down regularly between armed groups that compete for territory.

In August 2023, the struggle between two mighty armed groups left 55 deaths in Tripolis.

Several districts of the capital and its suburbs announced that the schools would be closed on Tuesday until further termination.

The United Nations mission in Libya called for peace.

“Unmil is alarmed by the unfolding security situation in Tripolis, whereby heavy weapons are fighting intensively in densely populated civilian areas,” it said on X.

It asked “all parties to stop the fights immediately” and warned that “attacks on civilians and civilian objects can mean war crimes”.

“Unmil fully supports the efforts of elders and community leaders to de -escalate the situation.”
