Note from the publisher: The video above contains clips from the live stream of the campaign event, in which the filming took place.

A Mexican mayor candidate and her daughter were among the four people who were shot on Sunday, May 11th, during a Facebook livestream of an election campaign. Three people were also injured in the attack.

The fatal shootout occurred in the eastern Mexican state of Veracruz.

The police identified the candidate as Jaenia Lara Gutierrez, who was part of the political party of President Claudia Sheinbaum.

What happened?

The Facebook Livestream shows a lot that seems to march in a parade before shots started. About 20 shots could be heard in the clip.

The investigators have not clarified whether they arrested a suspect, but they promised to bring those responsible for the judiciary.

Sheinbaum answers

Sheinbaum announced no motive for the assassination attempt at a press conference on Monday. The Mexican President said her administration had contact with the Veracruz authorities and said that the federal support is available if necessary, including the help of the Attorney General.

Sheinbaum noticed that Gutierrez 'death took place in two Mexican countries shortly before the elections on June 1st.

“We coordinate in particular with the security secretary and with the entire support that is needed during this election period by Veracruz and Durango,” said Sheinbaum.

A pattern of violence

After the death of Gutierrez, two federal agents were also killed in another part of Veracruz.

Targeted murders of politicians have become common in Mexico before and after election cycles.

According to Data Civica, a human rights group, a record number of people in politically related violence was attacked. In 2024, 661 politically related attacks on humans and institutions.

El Economist also reported that between June 2023 and June 2024 the country recorded the highest number of murders of politicians in recent history. A total of 63 political civil servants were murdered. Gutierrez 'murder also takes place after another mayor candidate was killed in the northern part of Veracruz late April.

In May 2024, a candidate for mayor was shot in the southern state of Guerrero during a campaign stop. Another mayor was killed only days after the attack after being shot back from the gym.

In autumn 2024, Straight Arrow News reported that the mayor of Guerrero's capital was murdered by a cartel just a few days after taking office.
