After a devastating car accident, a Largo man remains in a critical condition at the weekend that claimed the life of his two small children and long -term partners.

Herbert Rivera is currently in the intensive care unit after being undergoing a large operation on Tuesday to install a plate in his chest. His best friend said, while his physical injuries are serious, the emotional tribute could be even deeper. Rivera's 10-year-old son Jabari and 4-year-old son Charlie were immediately killed in the crash. His eight -year -old partner, Gail Price, also died.

What you say:

“He says it every time I speak to him – 'I just lost my two boys. I just lost everything,” said Jeff Howard, Rivera's best friend and medical strength of the lawyer. “You were really everything.”

The family had just started a birthday cake to celebrate Jabari's 10th birthday and, according to Howard, had done her hair. They were less than 50 meters from home than the crash happened. According to the Largo police, Gail drove a Kia and turned onto her street when her car was hit by a Dodge Durango, which was driven by the football player of the University of Miami, Adarius Hayes.

Rivera's 10-year-old son Jabari and 4-year-old son Charlie were immediately killed in the crash. His eight -year -old partner, Gail Price, also died.

Howard received the emergency call as a listed contact by Rivera, the type of call that nobody ever expected.

“It was only devastating,” he said. “You try to find out, did I hear that right?”

Rivera was able to be at the bed of Gail and hold her hand before she died of her injuries on Sunday. Friends describe as a warm and joyful presence in the life of the children – someone who treated them like their own.

“She was like the cool grandmother who all wanted,” recalled Howard.

While Rivera is fighting to recover, there are serious concerns about his future. He works under construction and it remains uncertain whether his injuries make it possible for him to ever return to the job.

Howard started an online donation campaign to help his friend manage the upcoming financial burden and said that the recovery process – both physically and emotionally – will be long and difficult.

“He really lost his whole world,” said Howard.

It is unlikely that Rivera can take part in the funerals of his sons due to his condition.

What's next:

In the meantime, the Largo police could take two to three weeks for a decision on potential fees.

Howard hopes that the tragedy will also serve as a memory of the importance of safe driving.

“The young driver of the other car, his life has changed. This is something he has to live with what really has to be hard. And then we will only see how the examination takes place and we will see what details are,” said Howard.
