Caroline, the hereditary princess of Monaco and Princess of Hanover through her marriage to Prince Ernst August, was accused of glorifying the colonial past in Europe with her choice of jewelry, EDA TV reported.

The 68-year-old Princess Caroline wore the Blackamoor brooch for Monte-Carlo Casino for an event for event that occurred to the French painter and sculptor Marcel Duchamp. She was accompanied by her daughter Alexandra and Alexandra's friend Ben Sylvester Strautmann.

What is Blackamoor jewelry?

Blackamoor jewelry refers to decorative art and decorations – mostly brooches, earrings or figures – that represent stylized African or Moorish figures. These figures are often shown in serviloses and made from materials such as ebony, onyx or dark enamel.

According to a report in the Spanish entertainment portal Vanitatis, Blackamoor jewelry became popular in the 16th and 19th centuries. This type of jewelry was once very common, but because of its racist connotations and stereotypes, representations of people with color got into a refinement.

Critics argue that Blackamoor pictures were not intended to reflect on real individuals, but to serve as symbols for prosperity, conquest and dominance of the Eurocentric look. As such, Blackamoor figures were typically shown in submissive or decorative roles.

Last controversy

Princess Caroline's brooch probably belonged to her mother Grace Kelly, who, according to Vanitatis, commissioned a piece of the Giulio Nardi jeweler.

Despite the criticism she received, several European Royals were photographed with examples of Blackamoor. Most recently, Princess Michael von Kent 2017 wore a Blackamoor brooch to a Frussy Bankett in Buckingham Palace. She later apologized for wearing it.

Queen Paola from Belgium, Ingrid Bergman and Elizabeth Taylor are known from Blackamoor.
