City of Binghamton with the lowest crime rates for years

Binghamton, NY (WBNG) – Officials of the city of Binghamton say that the crime rates have decreased in recent years.

But how much have you reduced and what changes have the Binghawom Police Department made to facilitate these lower prices?

From 2015 to 2020, a gradual increase in violent crime occurred in Binghamton. There were 310 reports in 2015, which grew to 379 by 2020.

In the past half decades, these figures have fell to 318 in 2023, with the previous year currently available with the FBI -Criminal Data Explorer.

According to the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services, the total number of crimes reported to the Binghamton Police Department also continued.

In 2020 the agency reacted to 2,217 crimes; By 2023, this number was only 1,980.

But how are these crime rates achieved?

The mayor of Binghamton, Jared Kraham, refers to more workers within the Binghadon Police Department, technology investments such as readers of number shells and street cameras throughout the city and the return of foot and bike patrols to the streets of the city as key investments that its administration has made.

Captain Larry Hendrickson spends his weekday in the afternoon at the department.

The layer brings it to all parts of the city and interacts with business owners and residents.

“When we drive past a car, it is much more difficult for someone to interact with us,” said captain Hendrickson. “When we walk through the streets, they can simply say” Hello “, and again they develop a relationship with people who see them again and again.”

The business owner Heidi Weeks of Mabel D. Orr Fashion Boutique in the Washington Street said that changing patrols not only give you a soul period, but also a sounding board for the most relevant topics for you.

“Building tensions, fighting can break out, only certain behaviors that others make uncomfortable when shopping or in restaurants,” said Weeks. “You want to feel safe, so it's just nice, there is someone outside who can talk a little bit down. Just say” move it with “.”

Since the police initiatives based in the municipality are at the top of their mind, city officials ask the residents to submit concerns to which they are exposed to every day.

“Call the mayor's office, we will link you to the resources of the Binghamton Police Department, such as the Community Response team, which focuses exclusively on police work in the neighborhood, on police work in the neighborhood,” said Kraham.

The city dwellers dictate their everyday life for the Community Response team.

“The community will be more than not dictated where our services have to be provided at a certain point in time,” said Officer Bryan Murphy at the Binghamton Police Community reaction team. “If you have a number of calls that go through a city council or just a neighbor who can receive our Sergeant, who says” Hey, we have this problem “, we check the machine every day and the load, so to speak. We see whether we have an activity that gives the information given by the person that has been appointed.”

The daily tasks can include everything, the safe concern that public parks are drugs and alcohol-free response to complaints in the neighborhood about suspicious behavior, the provision of everyday traffic stops or the support of special events such as Binghamtons annual St. Patrick's Day Parade.

In addition, the city officials refer to nationwide initiatives and investments in technology such as the Southern Tier Crime Analysis Center.

“Investments made in the Southern Tier Crime Analysis Center have significantly reduced crime in the city of Binghabon and significantly increased the cooperation between all different agencies, view the criminal element, identify trends and to view and ensure that all of our agencies are oriented with information,” said Kraham.

The Southern Tier Crime Crime Analysis Center, financed by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services, was opened in Binghamton in 2012. It is one of eleven crime analysis centers in the entire state.

“We have civilian employees, we have crime analysts, we have officers for crime, we have officers from the New York state police, the street and prison of Broome County Sheriffs, DCCs, probation, probation, police police, the police police, the police from Elmira here in the Southern Analysis Bidwell So “what it is: we support law enforcement with your needs.”

A special piece of technology that reduced weapons in the entire state is the access of the center to the national integrated ballistic information network or Nibin.

“A shootout that has happened here, when this weapon was used in Rochester, Endicott or Johnson City, we can link this weapon because the envelope is left a fingerprint, and we can say that this weapon was used for the same,” said Bidwell. “Our turnaround time used to take three to six months to one year to bring these results back. We deliver them in hours.”

But are these lower crime rates that the residents of the whole city feel more comfortable?

“If you have a group of friends who are ready to protect them and they are ready to protect them, they should be okay,” said the resident of Broome County, Dontai Greenwood. “Usually the police are available, so there is not much out of control because they are always nearby, that things are safe, the crime continues and as bad as possible, it doesn't get bad when people stay out of the way and are responsible.”

Crime data are collected at the level of the city, the state and the federal government and can be completely freely viewed by the public.
