Family friend of Largo Crash victim speaks out

Largo, Florida – Herbert Rivera lost his whole family in a car accident in Largo at the weekend. Four people were in the car, including his two children, and he was the only one who survived.

He is currently in the Bayfront Hospital and is fighting for his life. We spoke to his best friend Jeff Howard, who broke through this tragedy.

“I try to keep it together as if it were really sad what he is going through and what the families go through,” said Howard.

Howard has worked with Herbert for about 11 years, but her work relationship quickly became a lifelong friendship. Howard is now Herbert's emergency contact and makes the lawyer. So he contacted ABC Action News to help his dear friend.

“Herbs have just gone an operation,” said Howard. “He has six broken ribs and two broken clavicles, and they would have the ribs healed by themselves, but it turns out that they are wrong.”

So doctors said Howard that they add a titanium plate to Herbert's breast to keep everything safe.

All of this after losing his children, 10-year-old Jabari and 4-year-old Charlie in an accident in which Miami Hurricane Linebacker, Adarius Hayes, lost.

“No justice can be done to replace the loss of life,” said Howard.

Howard said that Herbert's family was on the way home after picking up a birthday cake to celebrate Jabari's birthday.

“You would have a birthday party later on this day and where they were hit, about 50 feet was removed from your front door and turned into your residential street,” said Howard. “So it's just super sad.”

Herbert also lost his life partner Gail Price. And he had to say goodbye to the hospital the next day.

“He was able to be on her bed when it happened, so it was a really difficult moment, but also to see what the nurses do,” said Howard.

Herbert will need a few weeks to recover physically, but Howard said it would take much longer for him to recover emotionally.

“In the last two nights he probably called me about three or four times in the middle of the night, and he will say: 'Hey, I can't believe my children are gone,” said Howard.

Howard said Herbert is expected to make complete recovery.

As for the investigation, this has not yet been completed.
