Investigation into the driver's death at the Plusha Junction on A30

A 79-year-old woman died of a crossroads in Cornwall after she had entered the path of an oncoming car, as was found in an investigation.

Geraldine Gibson, who lived near Launceston, was seen on the CCTV towards the central reserve of the A30 in Plusha before her vehicle was hit by a car on August 11, 2024.

The examination on Tuesday in Cornwall Coroner's Court heard that driver Amelia Collins had traveled along the A30 at 70 km / h and said: “I didn't see how it was pulled out. I could have done nothing to avoid the collision.”

Between 2015 and 2024, the deputy corporate doctor Emma Hillson heard that 22 accidents led to three deaths, nine serious injuries and a total of 54 victims at the intersection.

Miss Hillson said the majority of the collisions had the same maneuver that turned right from the B3257 to the Launceston-bound A30 lane.

Jack Mason, Road Safety Manager for National motorways in the southwest, said that the biggest factor for these collisions was “driver error”.

He said improvements were made at the Plusha crossing, and further changes in the region were made from 2026 to 2027.

The right turn from the Callton Junction in the A30 would not reopen after a temporary closure after the third fatal crash last November.

Ms. Gibson's grandson, Sam Johnson, said it was a “shame” security measures that could not be taken earlier, and added that he was “sad that other people were affected”.

Jamie Hubbard, police officer of Devon and Cornwall, said that there were no suspicious circumstances and that there would be no criminal proceedings.

Miss Hillson recorded a conclusion of the road traffic collision.
