Overdose of death in Michigan, USA

Upper Michigan, Michigan (WLUC) – Last year there were 30,000 deaths for the overdose of US drugs compared to the previous year: the largest one -year decline that was ever recorded.

In the course of the nation in 2024, the CDC recorded a decline in the overdose of the overdose by 27%compared to 2023. There was a decrease of 36%in Michigan.

Narcan or naloxone is a medication used to reverse opioid overdoses. The State Ministry of Health has distributed more than a million Narcan kits free of charge since 2020. The State State Administrative Weeker of MDHHS, Jared Welehodsky, attributes this program for a large part of the decline.

“Our efforts to expand access to naloxone were one of the biggest reasons why Michigan continues to do better than the national average,” said Welehodsky.

Marquette firefighters and paramedics Brandon Cory have experience on overdoses in the real world. He says that opioid overdoses have recognizable symptoms.

“Really lethargic, because it is a kind of advertising material, pin-point student, your respiratory rate will actually slow down, and that is usually what is urging someone to overdose, it is so much reducing her airway because you are so relaxed,” said Cory.

In 2024 alone, almost 12,000 Narcan kits were distributed in the UP if they believe that someone they know could use opioid, says Cory that they keep an eye on them.

“Just try to keep an eye on if you know that you are,” said Cory. “If you believe that something is going on, call 911 as soon as possible. I'm not 100% sure, but I think the health department or various pharmacies spend Narcan out.”

Welehodsky compared Narcan to a fire extinguisher: they hope that they will never have to use it, but they keep it in the case of the case.

Experts also honor the decline in the extended addiction treatment and the shift in the use of medication. Nevertheless, an estimated 80,000 people died of an overdose in the United States last year
