Opinion | We study fascism and leave the USA

I am a historian of totalitarianism. I look at fascist rhetoric. I have thought about the sources of the worst types of history for a quarter of a century. “Experts say that the constitutional crisis is here now.” “The Trump administration deports hundreds of men without legal proceedings.” “A massive cleaning of the FBI”, “to frighten people, to speak against him.” I go to Toronto University because I want to do my work without the fear that I will be punished for my words. The lesson from 1933 is that they come out earlier than later. I have spent a lot of time in the past ten years to prepare people once Trump has been chosen, let alone twice. “Look what happened. Is that crazy?” [CHEERING] I didn't fled from Trump. But when people leave the United States or leave American universities, there are reasons for it. One thing that you can definitely learn from Russians – is that it is important to set up resistance centers at places of relative security. In Russian in particular there are some words that help me understand what is happening in the United States because we now have these phenomena. “Proizvol”: It is the idea that the forces you have can do everything you want and you have no recourse. Curdom has no limit – “President Trump has not excluded the possibility of a third term.” – And Sadism – “The White House has published this video with the title ASMR Illegal Alien Deportation Flight.” – and the cruelty that we now see in real time. “This facility is one of the tools in our tool kit that we will use.” You have to ask yourself the question: “Is that okay? Is there a line that I would not cross? Is there something that I wouldn't do?” People say oh, the Democrats should do more. You should repair things. But if you want the Democrats to do things, you have to create the platform for you. You have to create the spectacle, the Pagantry, the positive energy, the physical place where you can come to you. Poland recently carried out a shift towards authoritarianism. In contrast to Russia, in contrast to Hungary in Poland, the media remained a place where they could criticize the regime. As a result, democracy returned. The moral of Poland is that our democratic institutions – the media, the university and the courts – are essential. They know that they live in a fascist society when they constantly go into their heads, why they are safe. What we want is a country where none of us have to feel that way.
