Chaotic, impressive and clever – with Ashley and Company

Netflix 'Maging Science fiction anthology series, Love, death + robot Is back with volume 4 and it is not disappointed. This new group of shorts is the same as chaotic, clever, impressive and visually diverse as offers of the previous seasons.

In 2019, Tim Miller (director of Deadpool) Love, Death, + Robots, started an animated Netflix series that aims to present his own blur studio and others. The idea was to give the audience something very different from everything else on the market. Since then, the series has won a prime time -Memmy for each of its three volumes. From sci-fi and fantasy to horror and animation fans, it is difficult to find someone who doesn't talk about this show. These shorts not only cover these topics, they also offer an animation show case and push the medium to go to new and fantastic places. This volume is no different. Volume 4 dares to think about our use of technology, eternity and even what it means to be human. They are Chaotic, clever, impressive and visually diverse.

As with previous volumes, the latest episodes range from gripping and chasing to full, stupid and just pure fun. Blur Studios “Spider Rose”, the rare continuation of band 3's “Swarm”, Japan's Polygon Pictures' “Because he can crawl” and the incredible “How Zeke Got Religion” by Titmouse are the main examples of the former. While Abgo's “The other Large Thing” and “Smart Appliances, stupid owners” (my favorite of the dark offers) are the latter from Aaron Sims Company. But this strange balance of darkness and light is one of the reasons why this show works so well. Because of this duality, everything is on the table to explore in any way how the studio and the storytellers keep fit.

The science fiction wildness of everything is great, but what I also admire about love, death, + robots are the graphics. From photo -realism to the stylized pictures and the exaggerated aesthetics, these shorts jump off the screen. It is the combination of fascinating stories and increases of images that make these episodes unforgettable and all make them talk about them. This season offers 10 floors and I selected my top 4 to tell more about it.

“Close encounters of the Mini -Art”

Robert Bissi and Andy Lyon used miniatures in volume 3 to tell a zombie apocalypse story. This time you use the same mechanics for an extraterrestrial invasion. It is a hilarious romp through the typical genre tropics with many moments “Look at how stupid these people are.

“Smart Appliances, stupid owners”

John Scalzi and the director Patrick Osborne presented “Three Robots: Exit Strategies”, one of my favorites from last season, and they also have the honor of doing my favorites of The Funny Love, Death, + Robots shorts this season. The animation in the Claymation style introduces us to anthropomorphic intelligent devices that sit down on confessional to share the horrors that they are in the houses. These machines are fed up with how they are used or not used. Everyone is expressed by a comedian, including Brett Goldstein, Amy Sedaris and Kevin Hart.

“Because he can crawl”

Tamsyn Muir (author of the closed grave) wrote this episode based on the novel by Siobhan Carroll. This is a story about how Satan (Dan Stevens) wishes the soul of a poet that he believes that he can help him achieve his darkest wishes. Fortunately for the poet, he has a loyal cat that is determined to save people. He does this by combining his equally powerful cat lovers to face the devil. The animation here is like a sketchbook that is very anime-affected in terms of details and power movements.

“How Zeke got religion”

Masters of the Air meets Hellboy in this episode of JT Petty and is based on a short story by John McNichol. This episode begins like any other war history before it quickly falls into pure horror. The Allied military's best crew is sent to France. Your commands: bomb a church. What you do not know is that the Nazis revive a fallen angel to help them in their evil machinations. If she faces this terrible supernatural being, even the exhausted zeke is forced to re -evaluate his views. The studio has done an astonishing (and nightmare-inducing) job that created the fallen angel and decided on a biblically accurate has-a cherubic face on a body that carries eyes everywhere. To say more would be to spoil it so that you have to look at it yourself. Good luck.

Verdict

Love, Death + Robot still delivers creative, chaotic, gripping and impressive works in Volume 4. Not all episodes are created equally, and like previous volumes, the mileage vary depending on the topic. But it is the willingness of the show to break forms, to push the animation envelope and enable storytellers to do what they best do without boxes to check what makes it such a success. Regardless of whether you want a post -apocalyptic story about giant babies, a fallen angel who destroys humanity, or intelligent devices that spill the tea for your owners. I just hope that this is not the end of this delightful strange and sometimes dark show.
