Laredo celebrates the day of the national language pathologist and highlights local care

Laredo, Tex. (KGNS) – When Laredo is ready to celebrate his birthday this weekend, another special day is progressing – the day of the national language pathologist.

Jessica Garcia, who helps with the head of therapy in the Laredo Rehabilitation Hospital, spoke about the work pathologists of the work speech and why it is important.

“The day of the national language pathologist is a time to sharpen and recognize our field,” said Garcia. “We evaluate and treat people of all ages with communication disorders, swallowing problems or cognitive problems.”

Language pathologists, also called SLPs, complete special training and can treat many types of language and language problems. Garcia said that they also help to decide whether a person needs speech therapy.

If a parent notices that his child has problems speaking, Garcia said that he could speak with his school or attend a clinic. Your hospital works mainly with adults, but other places in Laredo help children.

Garcia noticed a number of diseases that treat language pathologists. “We help patients with dysphagia, a swallowing disease that can occur after a stroke, and aphasia, a language disorder that is also associated with neurological events such as strokes,” she said. “We work in children with articulation disorders and phonological disorders.”

It emphasized the importance of early intervention. “If a child is treated early enough, it can definitely be corrected something if it grows,” she said. “Early diagnosis and treatment are the key.”

While the day of the national language pathologist is approaching, Garcia hopes that more people understand how language pathologists can help.
