Travis, El Paso Counties Sue Ken Paxton regulate for new crime reporting

The counties Travis and El Paso sue the Attorney General of Texas, Ken Paxton, for new reporting requirements that only affect 13 counties.

According to the AG's office, the rules are designed to own prosecutors who are not hard for crimes.

The requirements came into force on April 2.

Lawsuit against Ken Paxton

The background story:

Delia Garza, a lawyer of Travis County, and Christina Sanchez, a lawyer of El Paso County, argued that the new rules are unconstitutional and violated the separation of powers.

“This lawsuit is about protecting confidential information about our most endangered population and an unconstitutional presentation. It is about keeping our promise to the inhabitants of our jurisdiction and respecting the rule of law,” said Garza.

When the rules were announced, Paxton said that they should “insert the lawyers of the district districts and ensure the persecution of violent criminals”.

It only applies to counties with a population of 400,000 or more.

“This really seems to be a political problem that we already have to report that we have to respond to open data inquiries,” said Garza.

According to the district lawyers, the reports of the first year are estimated to prepare 3 million US dollars.

“We are also concerned about the financial effects that these counties have to bear,” said Sanchez.

There could also be confidential information about victims.

“All information that is available to the AG office questions the role of supporters and how we can ensure the security of the victims if their information is spread,” said Stephanie Richardson, director of victim services at the Travis County law firm.

“Ken Paxton was not voted Travis County. Delia Garza was chosen to pursue crimes, and Jose Garza was elected” If local voters did not agree to the performance of one of their elections, they and they will choose someone else. “

There is a time frame here in which the first reports are due, which will be pretty soon at the end of June, July. The need for measures and the timing for action was now, “said Sanchez.

In response to the lawsuit, Paxton says in a statement:

“It is no surprise that Rogue, who prefers to loose violent criminals on the street, than have their work before transparency and accountability. My DA report rule is a simple, uncomplicated, legally recognized measure that is illuminated by local officials who abdicate responsibility for public security.
